Mardi and Me
I named my new bike Mardi, for a couple of reasons, most of which are fairly obvious. One of the reasons I was motivated to go find him this weekend even though I am super busy and really wanted to go to Comic-Con was because Mardi Gras is coming up and I wan to be able to get around…due to road closures and general traffic, it will be hard to get around by car, so a bike seemed like a good idea.
Also, because I was walking around the Marigny while they were tuning the bike up and installing the pedals and baskets I wanted, and thinking how much I love Mardi Gras decorations. They are so pretty and fun, and it’s a really special thing. I feel a little bit like the true awesomeness of Mardi Gras is a secret for people who live (or have lived) in the city (except for maybe college students who might be too oblivious to notice).
People think of Mardi Gras as a big drunken party, and tourists come and flash each other in the streets— and there is that, definitely, but it’s really so so much more.
Anyways, Mardi is a little harder to ride than the cruiser I rented a few weeks ago, because I am still getting used to how to change the gears. But he’s way more comfy, and he’s pimped out with all the stuff I want, including a little grocery bag for running errands.
Since there’s no way I am ready to ride on Tchop or have the stamina to go to any of the major grocery stores, I am exploring all the food options around me, where I get get tuna salad and fruit and other staples. It is a fun way to get to know the city a bit better. He is the route we took today. It was 2.1 miles.
